Thursday Practice CANCELLED

Team -
The weather isn't looking good and I can't see Alpine not being completely ICY tomorrow if they are even open. So I'm making the call tonite to cancel practice for tomorrow.

Now this leaves us in a bad spot as winter break goes for the next two weeks.

I won't make practice mandatory during the break. BUT for all of you that are new to the team, I will be at Alpine every TUESDAY and THURSDAY over the break (as long as they are open). If you want to practice meet upstairs (where we met yesterday) at 5:30.  I can give instruction and then we can head out to the hill.

Asst. Coach Brian has also said that he will be at Alpine every Sunday morning if anyone wants to meet up with him and get further instruction. Brian is a snowboard instructor and former Lakeland Snowboardcross racer. He can help the beginner or advanced rider sharpen their skills. You can email him at this address: alternarock1230@aol.com if you want to make sure he'll be there.
Let me remind everyone that Time Trials are scheduled to be done on January 3rd. This means there will be no OFFICIAL practices before time trials. So I urge all riders to come out to the practices over the break. Hopefully Alpine will be able to make snow soon and start building our course so we can train on it.

If you have any questions, please email me or call. It's difficult for me to return calls at times, but I'm much more available by email and can usually get a message back quickly.

thanks

Waiting ....

Team,
We're still waiting on Alpine to start blowing snow. It looks like the temperatures will be consistently dropping so it looks likely that Alpine should start to blow snow very soon.

So take this opportunity to search out some videos, make sure your gear is ready to go, get your season's pass, and we'll hopefully see you on the slopes soon.

Check through the past posts on the blog, there are some good links to waxing and training videos.

To help detect young people who are at higher risk for sudden cardiac death, Beaumont Hospitals offers high school students a free heart screening. Our Healthy Heart Check includes: medical history review, blood pressure assessment and an electrocardiogram. A doctor will listen to the student's heart and may decide to do an echocardiogram, a noninvasive picture of the heart. Register now ( http://heart.beaumonthospitals.com/student-screening ).

Screenings are scheduled for:
Andover High School, Bloomfield Hills - April 20, 3 - 7 p.m.

2011 State Finals

Team,
Congrats to the Girls on their TOTAL sweep of the 2011 season! And also congrats to the boys for their hard-earned second place for the division, and third place at the state finals.

We had some bad luck for both the boys and girls for the individuals this year. But lets give it up for Alex Rew who fought her way to take 4th in the Finals for the girls!

Jake and I would like to send out a big THANK YOU to everyone that came out friday and cheered on the kids. Our spread of food was HUGE. I appreciate the efforts of all of everyone as it made for a great experience.

So that's the State Finals for 2011 ... 4 ambulance calls, broken chairlifts, DQ's, near-fights and crazy finishes. Sounds like a perfect chaos-filled finish to a boardercross season. The results are posted up on the blog.

I will be contacting everyone soon with information about the banquet.

Thanks for a great season! I look forward to 2011/2012.

Tonight is the Individual Time Trials for the State Finals. I hope you've got your COLD wax on!

Here's the list of those who will be running in the time trials. I am limited to how many riders can try out for the time trials this year. We will be running the time trials in the order similar to a race. So A1 riders will go first. This gives some wait time for everybody else. So stick around at the bottom and keep warm until your group is up.

As always - sign in at 5pm. Wait until the course is open for inspection.

2-3-11 Results and upcoming

The results from 2-3-11 are posted to the blog.

Great race last night! The girls had a 1st place sweep! I saw big improvements in starts last night.

I haven't heard who we'll be racing against yet form the other league. Sounds like we might not know until next week.

Time trials are tuesday. Looks like it will be cold, so use your cold wax. I'll send out a list of who will be doing the time trials on monday.

Just a reminder that even though you may not be racing in the State Final, you will be excused from school on that day if you choose to come out and cheer on your team. Everyone is responsible for their own transportation to the hill.

2-3-11 Lineup

Team-
I was just holding off to make sure the race was on for today ... and it's a GO!

Today is the State Final Qualifier. The First and Second place teams go to the state final on 2-11-11. There's a lot riding on this race. We need to race clean and fast. NO DQ's! We will not be doing Charlie gates today. But I still need Charlie riders to stick around. Remember - If I need to replace a rider, the Charlie riders are first on the list. Lets have all riders that aren't racing hang out at the bottom near the finish shack.

I need EVERYONE to be at the finish shack before 5pm today and stay there until Jake or I announce the course is open for inspection. I also want everyone to stick around for the whole race, and then for a meeting after so we can go over what will happen for next week.

Now - go wax your board!

2-1-11 Results etc. ..

The results are posted to the blog form 2-1-11 Double meet.

A couple of things we need to address....

  1. You are NOT allowed to ride the hill during the break. Alpine leaves the chairlift open for us to continue racing. Riders are NOT allowed to go anywhere else but to the top of the course.
  2. There is no reason to miss a gate. The next 2 races can be won or lost by one missed gate. 5th place is better than a DQ. If the last race where to happen again tomorrow night, the boys would not be going to the State Finals.
  3. Charlie riders - I need you to stick around for the whole race. I know it was rough yesterday because of the cold, but when I have an injured rider that needs to be replaced in the lineup, I can only use a Charlie rider.

Thursday will be the State Final Qualifier. The First and Second place teams of the boys and girls go to the State Finals. If there is no school, there will have to be a decision made about what is going to happen. I will let you know as soon as I know.

Tuesday the 8th will be the Individual State Finals Qualifier. It is a time trial format just like what we did the first of the year. The only difference is that I am only allowed to Time Trial 5 Alpha, 5 Bravo and 5 Charlie riders. I will post that list Monday.

There will be emails going out soon for food and refreshment volunteers for the State Finals .... when you respond, please make sure to REPLY ALL.

We're planning on having a wax party the night before the State Finals. The Dudas family has volunteered their home for us to all get prepared for the race. I'll forward information once we get closer.

Training Advice from Nate Holland

Boardercross FAQ

Team,
I have had some questions regarding how certain things work with the boardercross team. I will try to answer some in this email ...

How the races are run?
Each race consists of 1 rider from Lakeland, Milford, Detroit Country Day, Saint Mary's/Ladywood, and Romeo. These teams make up the East League. The West League (Howell, Brighton, Hartland and Williamston) compete at Mt. Brighton. We only meet them at the State Final.

If you take look at the result graphic that I post on the blog, you will see the order in which the races go. From top to bottom. The first race is the A Boys. Then we run the A Girls. Third is the B Boys followed by B Girls. Lastly we run the C riders.

A and B riders run 3 races. C runs 2.

The C riders are racing for experience only. So we try to fill the gate with whomever is ready to go. This is the reason that we don't have a roster for those races. We have started to announce bib numbers and school this year for the C riders.

How do the points work?

The points system is new this year. It was developed to place more emphasis on the higher gates (A1), eliminate placing better riders in lower gates to win more points, and to lessen the event of a tie. If you look at the sheet, you'll see that in the A1 race, first place is worth 334 points. With the rest of the places in that gate being 10 points apart. The next flight (A2) is 9 points apart for placement. The numbers decrease as the gates go down. The important thing to realize is that a A2 first place finish and a B5 first place finish can make up the point different for a A1 second place deficit. So even though B5 is technically worth less in total points, it's still important to win EACH race as it's all a combined score.

What is the significance of Time Trials?
The first event of the year - Time Trials - is a way for all of the coaches of all teams to gauge what riders are the fastest on our teams. This is a ROUGH gauge. Some riders do well with time trials, but freeze when riding next to others in a race. Some will time trial slow, but will excel in the close confines of racing. Because of the many aspects of boardercross, Jake and I came up with the "Team Placement Race" which now is also being used by the Milford Boardercross team as well.

What is the Team Placement Race?
The Team Placement Race is a system that we came up with to allow the riders to prove THEMSELVES to their team. It's a 3 race bracket system that will move riders up or down depending on how they place in a boardercross race against their OWN teammates. Unfortunately, with the unpredictability of boardercross, some riders will fall out of Point placement by not placing well in these races. The key is to be consistent, but to realize that sometimes you will have bad runs. It happens to the best. This system takes out the "coach favoritism" that is present in so many other high school sports. We will try to run a Team Placement race weekly as time and weather allow.

What's next?
We need to run a minimum of 8 races in a season. So there may be a double race coming up soon. I'll let everyone know when this is planned.

What's New this year?
The Divisional Final - This is a new race added this year. Scheduled for February 3rd. This race will take the top 2 teams to the State Finals on February 11th. In the past, it was the record of wins throughout the season which awarded the top 2 to the state finals.

Another Time Trial?
After the Divisional Final, we have a States Time Trial to place the top 20 riders from our division into the INDIVIDUAL race in the State Finals. So even though a team may not qualify for the State Final, individuals from that school can still go and compete. This is a VERY competitive bracket system that will ultimately crown the best boardercross racer for our league.

If you have any other questions regarding how boardercross works ... please feel free to ask.

It will be a single race, consisting of 3 heats for Alpha and Bravo. 2 heats for Charlie riders. The format will most likely be ABC, ABC, AB.

Remember, contact me if you are NOT able to make it.

Thursday after the race will be our first Team Placement Race. Giving those who missed the time trials to get in to the point placement running. This race will be 3 runs AFTER the official race. If you don't show up for this placement race, your gate placement will drop 2 spots. As always, if you have a conflict, come and talk to me or Coach Jake.
